The ÀTIJE Experience | Lagos

📍Ikoyi, Lagos

Spent a few days unwinding in Lagos and there’s a lot I can’t wait to share! So for starters, let’s talk about one of the highlights of the trip which was attending the Àtije Experience by Chef Moyo, curated by Eat Drink Lagos.

Àtije translates to ‘How We Eat’. This was an intimate gathering with about 15 guests including myself. I tried things I never thought I would (eating millet in a different form), learnt a lot more about Nigerian food & flavors, and most importantly, I made new foodie friends.

Let’s get into the food yes?

AMUSE-BOUCHE

akara

The first dish presented was a Nigerian street food staple, Akara, served with a salsa mix.

I usually like my akara on it’s own, but this was a nice twist on the bread & salsa usually served at restaurants.

APPETIZER

millet salad, citrus, chicken

Texture, texture, texture! That’s what you need to know about this dish! The crunch from the millet, corn, carrots & lettuce, the sweet, acidic, & chewy texture from the citrus and the savory from the chicken. Full explosion in the mouth.

MAIN

smoked fish native soup, sweet potato, uziza prawn

This dish immediately took me back to my recent London trip where I had the Lobster Bisque at Stork.

Beautiful broth rich with seafood flavors, sweet potato in two forms, mashed & as a crisp. Loved that. The uziza prawn tasted great as well.

SURPRISE COURSE

I’ve genuinely forgot what this dessert was called, but it was a sorbet made of baobab leaves and some other ingredients.

It was sweet with a grainy texture. The chef referred to a local candy called “Licki Licki” when describing the dish. This was a popular local candy during the early years of most millennials here in Nigeria.

I loved the element of surprise. Added to the general experience.

DESSERT

coconut crumble, mango sorbet, sesame tuile. Served with pineapple tea.

I was surprisingly full by the time it got to dessert. But whats the popular saying? There’s always room for dessert!

This was a lovely play of texture & flavors as well. Particularly loved the coconut crumble & sesame tuile. Paired beautifully with the mango sorbet.

Have you attended any of the Atije Experiences or Lunch Club by Eat Drink Lagos? Would love to hear your stories. Hopefully we have more experiences like these in Abuja as well.
